The lodge is just nine exclusive rooms: five cottages tucked into the hillside overlooking Lewa’s Western Marania Valley, plus three family cottages set beautifully in the midst of green lawns and a flourishing garden. Each room is luxuriously comfortable with it’s own rustic charm, while the relaxed atmosphere makes guests feel like they are visiting an old, family friend. Each of the rooms is different from each other, and all have a sitting room area with bar and open log fireplace as well as private en suite facilities.
The two different styles of rooms allow us to cater for a variety of preferences.
Garden Rooms
The Garden Rooms, or Family Cottages, are the original rooms that have been upgraded over the years, but they were initially built by David and Delia Craig almost thirty years ago. They are the nearest cottages to the main dining and sitting areas, consisting of two bedrooms attached by a comfortable sitting area with a bar and a cozy fireplace. Each bedroom has its own en suite facilities with a shower and running hot and cold water that is fresh from a spring fed by Mt. Kenya. These Garden Rooms are ideal for families, or for anyone who wants to be near the pool and the main part of the lodge. The green lawns out front provide plenty of outdoor space to use for relaxing or for a game of football.
Hillside Rooms
The Hillside Rooms are five, individual cottages that have been added most recently. Built into the hillside overlooking the eastern edge of the valley, they are perfectly positioned to catch the sunrise. Most of the cottages were built to capture the stunning, extensive view out over the valley with the constant, calm sound of the stream running just below where zebras, elephants, giraffe, rhinos, and more all come to drink.
Each room has a different layout in order to accommodate couples, friends traveling together, or families with children. They all have en suite facilities with a shower—some have a tub, as well; fresh, running hot and cold water; a private, cozy sitting area with a bar and a log fireplace; and a private, outdoor veranda.
All rooms are fully furnished with beautiful, unique pieces of furniture that have been designed and made here at the Wilderness Trails workshop. The carpets are also made on site as part of our carpet-weaving project that also employs and trains local craftspeople. Guests can visit both the furniture workshop and the carpet-weaving project to see how the craftwork is done.
