Experience the wilderness in one of its most authentic forms by horseback. Without the noise of a vehicle, you can ride silently through the landscape, a true privilege that allows you to get closer to the wildlife.
Our gentle, well-trained horses are very used to carrying novice riders. You’ll have the chance to ride out on the plains surrounding the lodge alongside animals such as giraffes, zebras, impala, waterbuck, and more.
For advanced equestrians, we can offer more challenging rides into the valleys beyond, climbing our way through some beautiful terrain. Full- morning excursions can be organised to allow you to spend more time in the saddle exploring the conservancy. Guests must be competent at a rising trot and a two-point canter with soft hands and an independent seat, our horses are trained to be ridden English, but we do have Trial saddles available.
*The weight limit for horse riding is 90kgs/200lbs
For those experienced riders, you can join us for a night out under the stars with the horses in our Fly Camp! Leave the lodge behind and experience the magic of sleeping out in the wilderness with your horse tied to a picket line nearby.
To participate in this activity, you will need to be balanced in the saddle and confident at controlling a sensible, but fit horse in all paces and across rugged terrain in big game country. Your ability to react quickly and confidently to unexpected situations is essential for your safety.
The fly camp is very simple, but comfortable, with everything that you need for the night. Sundowners and hot bucket showers await your arrival, followed by a three-course meal cooked on the open fire. There is a choice of sleeping in the canvas dome tents or out in the mosquito net domes for the optimum immersive experience.
*This special activity incurs an extra cost.
Not much of a horse rider? Head out on a walking safari with an experienced guide instead, and camp out overnight at our beautiful fly camp.

Originally bred to play polo on a nearby farm but unfortunately, she was not very good at it! Luckily for us being relaxed on safari is much more her style, and her brother Kaskazi will often try to follow along on the ride if they are separated.
This beautiful Irish Draught mare from our own herd is known for carrying novice riders across the plains in comfort. Her kind nature and sweet temperament has been passed on to her foals and she is even a proud grandmother of the next generation of safari stars.
Morocco was born and bred at Lewa Wilderness and lives here with both of her parents. This little lady is always cool, calm and collected on safari and will surprise you with the most wonderful scopey jump if given the chance.
Found on a farm in South Africa, this Friesian x Boerperd was originally brought up for guests but when he arrived he was very nervous of people. Miranda spent a lot of time with him and now he is one of the bravest lead horses, the trust he puts in his rider makes him very special.
For the last 10 years Doctor has been a powerful force on the polo field, however as time moves on, we have decided to bring him across to the safari yard so that he can enjoy the later years of his career strolling through the bush.
A true chestnut mare at heart, she is intelligent, opinionated, and bold and likes everyone to know how important she is! A firm favourite with the guides, and every guest who rides her.
